  • ASSERT Lab & INES & UFPE researches at VEME Workshop

    In 9 – 14 August 2015 St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, the ASSERT LAB group will participate of the 20th International Bioinformatics Workshop on Virus Evolution and Molecular Epidemiology (VEME), more information here.

    Biomedical data processing is a relatively new and challenging research field. Some of these challenges are addressed for Software Engineering, mostly the ones that handle with big data processing, pattern recognition, alignment and mapping of genetic and molecular information.

    With the intention of assist researchers for training in Bioinformatics methods, the International Committee for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) will promote from august 9 to 15 of 2015 the international workshop on Virus Evolution and Molecular Epidemiology (VEME), hosted by The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. The workshop is co-organized by the University of Leuven (Belgium) and the J. Craig Venter Institute (USA).

    One of 4-day course offered is  ‘Large Dataset Analysis’  that will cover the more complex analysis of full genomes, huge datasets of pathogens including Next Generation Sequencing data, and combined analyses of pathogen and host. On day 5, the workshop have some half-day courses including ‘Large Phylogenies’, ‘Visualization of Large Phylogenies with Metadata’, ‘Recombination and Networks’ and ‘Virus Analysis Tools’.

    Vinicius Cardoso Garcia pretends to attend the VEME 2015 with his Phd student Jackson Raniel Florencio da Silva in order to better understand the Software Engineering applications and practices in bioinformatics field and to start to work together with the Rega Institute research group (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) in order to establish new research trends and partnership in the context of the RegaDB project.

  • INES at Information Storage and Management Faculty Readiness Seminar

    Prof. Vinicius Cardoso Garcia will attend the Information Storage and Management ­ Faculty Readiness Seminar, promoted by EMC Education Services, on July 21-25 of 2014, at São Paulo, Brazil.

    The Information Storage and Management (ISM) is the only course of its kind to fill the knowledge gap in understanding varied components of modern information storage infrastructure. It provides a strong understanding of information storage technologies which prepares you to learn advanced concepts, technologies and also enable you to make more informed decisions in an increasingly complex IT environment. You will learn about the architectures, features, and benefits of Intelligent Storage Systems; storage networking technologies such as FC-SAN, NAS, and IP-SAN; long-term archiving solution – CAS; various business continuity solutions such as backup and replication, the increasingly critical area of information security, and the emerging field of storage virtualization including storage resource management. The technologies described in the course are illustrated and reinforced with EMC product examples. Realistic case studies enable the participant to design the most appropriate solution for given sets of criteria.

    Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

    • Evaluate storage architecture; understand logical and physical components of a storage infrastructure including storage subsystems
    • Describe storage networking technologies such as FC-SAN, NAS, IP-SAN and data archival solution – CAS
    • Identify different storage virtualization technologies and their benefits
    • Understand and articulate business continuity solutions including, backup and recovery technologies, and local and remote replication solutions
    • Define information security, and storage security domains
    • Identify parameters of managing and monitoring storage infrastructure and describe common storage management activities and solutions
    This activity is in compliance with the project “Social Machines and Research Team – SMaRT” and will improve the results of the research being done by ASSERT Lab.

  • INES at the 38th Annual IEEE International Computers, Software, and Applications Conference (COMPSAC)

    A paper from ASSERT Members has been accepted for the Industrial Session of the 38th Annual International Computers, Software & Applications Conference (COMPSAC 2014) to be held in Västerås, Sweden, on July 2014. The paper is entitled  “Experiences Integrating Heterogeneous Government Open Data Sources to Deliver Services and Promote Transparency in Brazil“, by Kellyton dos Santos Brito, Marcos Antonio da Silva Costa, Vinicius Cardoso Garcia and Silvio Romero de Lemos Meira.

    A brief summary of the paper is following: “The use of Government Open Data to deliver services and promote transparency is a current goal of many governments. In this paper, we briefly describe two contest winner applications with focus on these goals, and present a discussion about the difficulties of integrating Government Open Data to develop them.”

    This activity is part of the project “Social Machines and Research Team – SMaRT” and is one of the results of the research being done by ASSERT Lab.

    This paper will be soon available on IEEE Digital Library. A new post will be done after the conference, presenting our impressions of the event and the feedback from research community about the work.

  • INES at WP2P+ (SBRC’2014)

    INES will be present at the Workshop on P2P Networks, Dynamics, and Social Content-Oriented (WP2P+) in conjunction with the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC’2014) to be held in Florianópolis (Santa Catarina) 5-9 May 2014. This activity is part of the project “Social Machines and Research Team – SMaRT” and is one of the results of the research being done by ASSERT Lab.

    The paper is entitled “Cloud Disk Drive – Uma abordagem para a criação de discos virtuais de baixo custo utilizando redes p2p” by Anderson Fonseca e Silva, Frederico Araújo Durão, Vinicius Cardoso Garcia and Rodrigo Elia Assad. A brief summary of the paper is following:

    Este trabalho apresenta uma proposta para a disponibilização de unidades virtuais para armazenamento de dados em nuvem, através da associação de tecnologias e conceitos, tais como: ISCSI e redes P2P. Desta forma, os arquivos podem ser distribuídos em nós conectados a rede,permitindo a oferta de armazenamento em disco de maneira compartilhada e a redução de custos pelo ofertante do serviço.

  • INES at WWW’2014

    Two papers from INES collaborators and UFPE PhD students have been accepted for the International World Wide Web Conference (WWW’2014) to be held in Seoul, South Korea, on April 2014. Leandro M. Nascimento, author of both papers, will attend the conference and present both papers.  This activity is part of the project “Social Machines and Research Team – SMaRT” and is one of the results of the research being done by ASSERT Lab.

    The first paper is entitled “A New Architecture Description Language for Social Machines” by Leandro Nascimento, Vanilson Burégio, Vinicius Garcia and Silvio Meira. A brief summary of the paper is following:

    The term ‘Social Machine’ (SM) has been commonly used as a synonym for what is known as the programmable web or web 3.0. Some definitions of a Social Machine have already been provided and they basically support the notion of relationships between distributed entities. The type of relationship molds which services would be provided or required by each machine, and under certain complex constraints. In order to deal with the complexity of this emerging web, we present a language that can describe networks of Social Machines, named SMADL – the Social Machine Architecture Description Language. In few words, SMADL is as a relationship-driven language which can be used to describe the interactions between any number of machines in a multitude of ways, as a means to represent real machines interacting in the real web, such as, Twitter running on top of Amazon AWS or mashups built upon Google Maps, and obviously, as a means to represent interactions with other social machines too.

    The second one is entitled “Personal APIs as an Enabler for Designing and Implementing People as Social Machines” by Vanilson Burégio, Leandro Nascimento, Nelson Rosa and Silvio Meira. The paper abstract is following:

    In this paper, we extend our initial classication scheme for Social Machines (SM) by including Personal APIs as a new SM-related topic of research inquiry. Personal APIs basically refer to the use of Open Application Programming Interfaces (Open APIs) to programmatically access information about a person (e.g., personal basic info, health-related statistics, busy data) and/or trigger his/her human capabilities in a standardized way. Here, we provide an overview of some existing Personal APIs and show how this approach can be used to enable the design and implementation of people as individual SMs on the Web. A proof-of-concept system that demonstrates these ideas is also outlined in this paper.

  • UFPE Researchers at CBSoft 2013

    Lucas Lima, a PhD student from UFPE, and Prof. Márcio Cornélio will present the paper “A Formal Semantics for SysML Activity Diagrams” at the CBSoft 2013. This is a full paper presentation at the Brazilian Symposium on Formal Methods (SBMF).

  • INES at 17th EASE – Part II

    The paper “Cloud Testing Framework” authored by Crescencio Rodrigues Lima Neto (DCC-UFBA and IFBA), and Vinicius Cardoso Garcia (CIn-UFPE), has been accepted for publication at the 17th International Conference on Evaluation and Assessment in Software Engineering (EASE’2013). The conference will be held in April 14 – 16, 2013 at Porto de Galinhas, Brazil.

    A brief overview of the paper is given next

    Cloud-based testing introduces a new set of challenges. While many companies are approaching cloud computing with cautious, testing appears to be next area of growing interest. This paper propose the development of a new framework focusing on cloud testing. We intend to define the activities, roles, techniques, and tools that will be used in an integrated framework. A research methodology containing all the steps that will be executed during the proposal implementation was defined. A schedule was suggested in order to allow the research development. We propose a new Cloud Testing framework and we present the research methodology and schedule that will be used to implement the proposal.

  • INES at EMC Summer School on Big Data

    Profa. Bernadette Farias Lóscio will attend the EMC Summer School on Big Data, on February 4-7 of 2013, at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Summer School aims to introduce graduate students, faculty and practitioners to the main concepts related to Big Data. Specifically, the Summer School will cover the following topics: MapReduce and Hadoop, Massive Parallel Processing in Databases, Big Data Analytics, Probabilistic Databases and Big Data, Data Mining and Machine Learning on Big Data, Massive Data Storage, Cloud Computing and Big Data, Scientific Workflows and Big Data and Big Data Application Domains.

  • INES at 28th Symposium On Applied Computing (SAC’2013)

    The paper “Smart Cities Software Architectures: A Surveyauthored by Welington Manoel da Silva, Gustavo Henrique Rodrigues Pinto Tomas, Kelvin Lopes Dias, Ricardo Alexandre Afonso, Alexandre Alvaro and Vinicius Cardoso Garcia has been accepted for publication in the Software Architecture: Theory, Technology, and Applications (SA-TTA) Technical Track at the 28th Symposium On Applied Computing (SAC’2013).

    The conference will be held in March 18 – 22, 2013 at Institute of Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (ISEC-IPC), Coimbra, Portugal.

    This activity is part of the project “Social Machines and Research Team – SMaRT” and is one of the results of the MSc research being done by Welington Manoel da Silva and Gustavo Henrique Rodrigues Pinto Tomas and PhD research being done by Ricardo Alexandre Afonso.

    A brief overview of the paper is given next

    The smart cities concept arises from the need to manage, automate, optimize and explore all aspects of a city that could be improved. For this purpose it is necessary to build a robust architecture that satisfies a minimal number of requirements such as distributed sensing, integrated management and flexibility.

    Several architectures have been proposed with different goals, but none of them met satisfactorily the needs that permeate smart cities.

    In this work various architectures are discussed, highlighting the main requirements that they aim to fulfill. Furthermore, based on different architectures with the most varied purposes, a set of requirements for the implementation of a smart city is presented and discussed.
